Success on Home Turf: How We Dominated the Driverless Category at FS Czech
Success on Home Turf: How We Dominated the Driverless Category at FS Czech

After the first very successful race in Spielberg, Austria, we were waiting for the home race FS Czech, which was held for the seventh time in the area of the Most polygon. Our team competed in both the autonomous category and the piloted electric category. In the autonomous category, we were the overall winners of the race and in the piloted category, we came in a beautiful 12th place out of 47 teams.

The Czech race started on Monday 5.8.2024. The first day was very busy. Our team was waiting for the arrival to the venue, unpacking the camp and the facilities on the circuit, then the safety check of the single seater, pilot equipment, and last but not least the mechanical and electrical inspection and battery inspection. Apart from the electrical inspection, we passed every item on the agenda and could concentrate on the following days.

Tuesday morning included the completion of the technical inspections and in the afternoon the first of the static disciplines was on the agenda, namely the presentation of the Business Plan. Next, all the necessary tests were successfully completed, i.e. tilt test, rain test and brake test for both piloted and autonomous car modes, thus fulfilling all the prerequisites for participation in the dynamic disciplines.

Wednesday morning started with the static Cost and Manufacturing Event. We then prepared for the autonomous dynamic disciplines that were scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Our autonomous formula managed to complete the acceleration and skidpad without any problems and in great times. In the evening, the final round of the Business Plan Presentation took place, where our team fought their way through and presented their business plan in five minutes, focusing on a board game inspired by the Formula Student competition, which had a great response from both the audience and the judges.

The following day started with static disciplines, namely Engineering Design for the piloted category (EV) and then also for the autonomous category (DV). After the successful presentation of the Engineering Designs, members of our team started preparing for the afternoon Dynamic Disciplines of the Autonomous Category. Our single seater successfully completed the last two autonomous disciplines on Thursday afternoon: Autocross and Trackdrive. After completing the dynamic disciplines, our team began preparing for the evening finals of the static disciplines of Cost and Manufacturing and Engineering Design. We became the only team at FS Czech to make it to the finals of all static disciplines.

After a successful day on Thursday, minor technical complications came on Friday morning along with the first two dynamic disciplines of the piloted formula. We managed to leave Skidpad and Acceleration at the last minute. After lunch, our team prepared for the autocross discipline, which both drivers successfully completed and we qualified for the main endurance discipline on Saturday afternoon. On Friday evening, all the teams gathered for the first results ceremony, where our team dominated the podium and ran away with two first places in the Skidpad and Engineering Design disciplines for the autonomous category, second place in the autonomous acceleration and third place in the Business Plan presentation discipline in the electric category.

Saturday morning our team was preparing for one of the most important disciplines of the race, the Endurance discipline, which started at 15:00. Our piloted formula managed to complete all 22 laps without any problems, but a minor fault was found at the technical inspection, which caused a disqualification in the Endurance discipline. Our team was in a gloomy mood, which was cured by the evening results announcement. We made it to the podium to claim first place in the Autocross discipline, second place in the Autonomous Trackdrive discipline and last but not least to celebrate the tremendous success of the Autonomous Formula. Our team became the overall winner in the autonomous category and dominated the Formula Student Czech Republic race in Most!

In the electric category, we placed 12th out of 47 teams, even after the unsuccessful Endurance. Our team once again showed that it has a huge potential and is able to compete with the best teams in the world.

Our team would like to thank everyone who supported us and looks forward to the next races.
